Program Participants: Students identified or self-identified for a willingness to talk about issues, actions, and behaviors which currently are bringing to them negative consequences at home, at school, or within their peer group. Participants must register for the program by calling 753-0958, ext 224.The cost of the program is $20.

Program Goals: Confronting the frustrations of daily survival in a balanced and adaptive way is important in successfully achieving long-term goals. It is also a key measure of healthy interactions at home, in the workplace and in our interpersonal relationships. This program offers 4 interactive discussions to help students and their families build greater conscious awareness of emotional conflict, some of its causes and effects, and different ways to view, as well as handle, these conflicts. Family and interpersonal communication styles/skills will be identified and discussed, as well as specific conflict management concepts.

Length of Program: The group lasts 4 weeks. Meetings are on Wednesdays from 5:45-7:15 PM (families may start the group on any Wednesday). The program meets at the Manatee High School Administration Building, , 902 33rd St. Court West, in the 2nd  floor conference room.

 

Program Content

Week 1: Dealing with the World – Inside and Out
emotions - what are they, where do they originate, primary vs secondary; perceptions and dealing with reality; emotions vs attitudes vs behaviors; positions vs wants vs needs and wants becoming needs

Week 2: Gathering Information
what is anger; anger myths; how much of your anger is learned/modeled; three personality types and three anger styles; communication – types, styles and conflict management

Week 3: Identifying the Problem
anger as a habit; using our anger - helpful or harmful and when it's a problem; the aggression cycle; participants, triggers and cues; emotional conflict as a challenge to meeting other goals; unhealthy coping mechanisms

Week 4: The Real Causes And Addressing The Problem
holding on to hurts and fairness vs happiness (perceptions and positions vs wants vs needs revisited); healthy coping - the brain and oxygen (deep breathing); thought stopping (counting/time outs); stress management; goal setting; taking responsibility and forgiving
