Support & Intervention Programs

TITLE I
Title I is a federally funded program aimed at improving the learning of children in high-poverty schools to enable them to meet challenging academic and performance standards. The program provides instructional support to approximately 5,000 students in 14 elementary schools and offers supplemental education programs at eligible Alternative Program sites.

Title I provides Accelerated Literacy Learning (A.L.L.), an early intervention reading program for at-risk first-grade students, in several Manatee County elementary schools.

FULL SERVICE SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Full Service Schools programs are provided at two locations within the county. The Mary Simpson Strong Full Service Center is located at Tillman Elementary in Palmetto and the Harllee Full Service Center is located at Harllee Middle School. Many services in the district, as well as through community agencies, (such as the Health Department, WIC, Agriculture Extension Services, Healthy Start, Workforce Development, Adult Education) Whole Child Project and case management are provided to assist families in need to support the education of their children.

SAFE SCHOOLS
The safe and Drug Free program provides curriculum materials and instruction targeting prevention of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence among students. This also includes special events, projects, as well as after-school programs.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES
English for Speakers of Other Languages (E.S.O.L.) is a program required by law to provide special English and content courses to all limited English proficient students. All teachers serving these students are required to have specialized training in methods, culture, curriculum, testing and applied linguistics. All instruction is provided in English. Programs are available in all district schools, as well as for pre-kindergarten and adult students.

MIGRANT / IMMIGRANT EDUCATION
The Migrant and Immigration Education Program provides instructional support and assistance to more than 3,000 students and their families each year.

DROPOUT PREVENTION / ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION
Many schools provide special programs for students who are having difficulty in traditional classroom settings. These programs provide alternative teaching strategies to better meet the needs of eligible students. A variety of options are available for at-risk students who may need alternative educational placements.

JUVENILE JUSTICE PROGRAMS
Juvenile Justice programs provide education to students who are involuntarily assigned either by Juvenile Justice Staff or court ordered by a Judge. The Board provides teachers for some of these academic programs, while others such as Manatee County Juvenile Justice Charter, Hurricane Island Outward Bound, Gulf Coast Marine and PACE have their own educational staff.

ATTENDANCE AND TRUANCY
Manatee County has Compulsory School Attendance that, by law, requires all children ages 6 - 18 to attend school. Truancy officers track and assist schools in providing intervention for students with excessive unexcused absentee and tardy rates. Truancy officers also refer students and parents for services through Children and Families in Need of Services (CIN-FINS). Habitual truants are referred for alternative programs and may have cases referred for subsequent court action.

PROJECT HEART
Project Heart is a program which assists families and students who are homeless or at risk of becomming homeless. Tutoring, school supplies, case management, referrals for services in the community, and counseling are provided at several locations in the community. Assistance with school registration and remaining in the same school throughout the school year may be provided.
