Michael Pierce - promoted support for the “Love our Children” Conference, to support a recently proposed Legislative Bill about truth in testing, and the parent's right to know (to see the questions and answers of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test taken by their children). 8. Dave Miner - congratulated Mr. Miller for receiving the Ed Price Humanitarian Award at the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Dinner. He announced a meeting of the “Region IV for Goal 8” in St. Petersburg on February 20. Mr. Miner then spoke in opposition to the school district's reduced student day (reference - Minutes of August , 2003). BOARD COMMENTS Mrs. Harvey King Middle School - announced that there is no plan to demolish King Middle School, and that King Middle School students would not be shipped to another school, contrary to rumor. Martin Luther King, Jr. Banquet and Parade - commended the people of Palmetto for these excellent activities. Kid Care Insurance - encouraged parents to apply at their child's school for insurance. Manatee Technical Institute Focus Group - commended Bill Horton, Assistant Superintendent for School Support Services, for the structure and content of this recent meeting. Sheriff's Bootcamp - encouraged everyone to visit the Sheriff's Bootcamp, to have an awareness of the needs of our children. Response to Public Comment - said that contrary to a public comment made this evening, Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream did not pertain to the reduction in the school day. Mr. Kinnan The Company of Talent - lauded fellow Board Members for awards or recognition of talent, including Mr. Simmons' award from the Manatee Schools Foundation; Mr. Brunner's introduction of Eddie Shannon at a recent dedication ceremony; Mrs. Harvey's upcoming award at the Negro Foundation; and Mr. Miller's receipt of the Ed Price Humanitarian Award. Manatee Technical Institute Focus Group - made several complimentary remarks regarding this recent meeting. Martin Luther King, Jr. Events - commended the two students who presented essays at the MLK Banquet. School Choice - said issues always arise out of School Choice issues; and that he would be speaking to Superintendent Dearing about increasing the number of people and people of the community at the grass roots level to provide input in the process.
