BOARD COMMENTS - (CONTINUED)

Mr. Miller

Rowlett Parent University - commended Brian Flynn (Principal of Rowlett Elementary School) and his staff for the strategies he uses to recruit students and introduce parents to the opportunities at Rowlett Elementary School.

Rowlett Shorts - announced to Board Members that they would be receiving a copy of the video filmed by Rowlett Elementary School students.

Fundamental Schools - encouraged staff members to consider exploring the concept of a Fundamental School in Manatee County.

Reported Absence - announced he would be attending a conference next week and would therefore be unable to attend the Budget Workshop. He requested a copy of all information provided Board Members at that workshop.

Incident at Prine Elementary School - suggested the School Board honor the two students who recently informed administration about an incident on the school campus involving a weapon.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Banquet - commended two students for their essays. Thanked the Palmetto Youth Center for hosting the recognition.

Mr. Brunner

Martin Luther King, Jr. Activities - said it is always a great source of pride that each year more and more young students are represented in the MLK Day Parade.

Manatee County Fair - congratulated the district for showcasing the Science and Engineering Fair at the Manatee County Fair, along with all the usual talent on display at the Fair.

Coach Eddie Shannon - remarked on the high number of lifetime educators in Manatee County who have been recognized with various honors throughout the year, including Coach Eddie Shannon.

King Middle School Project - Commended Superintendent Dearing, Mr. Kinnan, and Bill Horton (Assistant Superintendent for School Support Services), Mr. Horton's staff, Sarita Montalvo and Debbie Simpson (community members) for meeting the challenge in providing the update on the King Middle School project just prior to the Christmas Holiday Break.

Mr. Simmons

Accolades to Mr. Kinnan - pointed out that although he was quick to praise the accomplishments of other Board Members, Mr. Kinnan, too, has been the honored recipient of an award at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Banquet in recent years.

Recognition to Prine Elementary School Students - suggested that the two young men from Prine Elementary School be brought before the Board in a future Meeting for recognition as young heroes.

Manatee Technical Institute Focus Group - agreed with the comments of other Board Members regarding the MTI Focus Group.

Manatee County Fair - encouraged the community to visit the "Tech Bowl" while visiting the fair. He thanked Jim Pauley, Palmetto High School Principal, for providing parking passes to the Fair.

School Choice - commended the district's School Choice process, noting that he is not aware of any county that has better success than Manatee County in the School Choice process.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

1.  Prine Elementary School Ground Breaking - Announced the February 4 groundbreaking ceremony for the new Prine Elementary School facility.

2.  Relocation of Benderson Corporation - reported regarding a recent meeting with representatives of the Economic Development Council and Benderson Corporation executives, who are in the process of planning a relocation effort to Manatee County.

3.  Manatee County Fair - expressed pride in the many events and activities in which school district staff and students participate at the Fair, which he and his wife observed this past weekend.

4.  Commendation re Ernie Padgett, Manatee County Administrator - thanked Ernie and staff, and Board of County Commissioners for the excellent working relationship he has experienced with him in issues involving the quality of life for this community that affect both agencies.
