Laureen Smith - suggested the Board is lacking fiscal responsibility by continuing to have prayer at the start of School Board Meetings. She said the Board is elected for educational purposes, and not for the demonstration of its faith. She asked why some students were asked to bow their heads in prayer at a conference several days ago. Mark Barnebey, School Board Attorney, said he was not familiar with the situation raised by Ms. Smith and requested that she inform him about which conference she is speaking about. 2.Dorothy Werner - spoke in opposition to the School Board's practice of reciting sectarian prayer at the start of School Board Meetings. 3. Raphael Allen - member of MCCAT (Manatee County Community Action Team) - said he is still awaiting a school to be built in Central Bradenton. He asked Board Members to look at a pamphlet which includes figures about the metropolitan areas near Manatee County provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, and printed in 1998; he said he would like to know how much improvement has been made since that time, and perhaps someone can meet with him and let him know what is happening in that situation. Mr. Allen also requested the Board to look at the growth in Central Bradenton. Mr. Miller requested that the Superintendent provide an update on this situation for the Board. |
