BOARD COMMENTS

Mr. Brunner

Johnson Middle School Newsletter - commended the school for the content of their most recent newsletter.

Transportation of Redistricted Students - requested that Dr. Dearing address the issue of redistricted students who must cross over Highway 41 en route to Harllee Middle School.

Commencement Ceremony Participation - requested Dr. Dearing to provide information about participation in commencement exercises for those students who did not pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), but did have passing scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Test (ACT) examinations.

Mr. Miller

End of Year Events - said there are many evenings where more than one event is scheduled at the same time, however he intends to attend as many end of year events as possible.

Budget - expressed disappointment in the lack of funding from Tallahassee for the next fiscal year, and challenged the Superintendent to find a creative way to budget raises for teachers.

Graduation Options - requested that staff share with graduates what their options are with regard to graduation.

Mrs. Harvey

Transportation of Redistricted Students - noted that she had requested information regarding redistricted Bayshore Garden students who must cross over Highway 41 en route to Harllee Middle School.

Participation in Graduation Ceremonies - said that although she is pleased that SAT and ACT scores will be accepted for graduation. She noted we are one of the few counties in the State of Florida that will not allow students who did not pass the FCAT to participate in graduation ceremonies. She requested the local newspapers publish the information regarding student participation in these examinations.

Teen Pregnancy - encouraged parents to discuss teen pregnancy with their children.

Brown v. The Board of Education - invited participation in the reenactment of the decision of Brown v. The Board of Education production on Thursday evening at Neel Auditorium of Manatee Community College.

Anna E. Gayle Resource Center - invited the community to an event at this resource center at 2112 3rd Avenue East in Palmetto, on Friday, from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Mr. Kinnan

Bayshore Gardens Residence Meetings - thanked the Superintendent for meeting with residents of Bayshore Gardens regarding the issue of redistricting.

Budget - requested a presentation on the outcome of the Legislative Session.

Test Scores - noted the State is allowing a substitution of the SAT or ACT for graduation. He encouraged school and student participation in this option.

Girl Scout Competition - made complimentary remarks about the Girl Scout organization and their proactive measures to educate children regarding obesity.

Top 4 Percent Beach Bash - thanked Ed Chiles for providing the facility for the Beach Bash, an activity for the academic top four percent of students.

Information re Graduates - said Dr. Dearing is in the process of compiling a list of schools that have accepted the district's graduates.
