PUBLIC COMMENTS

1. Jeff Johnson (Pepsi Representative) - spoke on the exclusive beverage contract.

2. Joanie Derry - expressed concern regarding taxpayer dollars being spent for attorneys in a matter of litigation (T.D.-F. v SBMC et al).

3. Dave Miner - spoke on various budget priorities being made by the District.

4. Dan Crumpler - described his experience and satisfaction while staying at Manatee High School as a hurricane shelter during Hurricane Charley on August 13.

BOARD COMMENTS

Mr. Kinnan

Hurricane Charley - expressed his appreciation to staff for meeting the needs of Manatee County during the recent hurricane.

School Year Opening - gave a thank you to staff for a successful, smooth school year opening.

Mr. Brunner

Back to School Night - said he was impressed with the large turnout from the community at various Back to School Nights prior to the beginning of school.

School Shelters - gave kudos to staff for the preparation done at hurricane shelter sites as Hurricane Charley approached our area.

Direct Materials Purchase Program - stated there is a large amount of dollars being saved through the use of this program in our district.

Legislative Law Regarding the Recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance - commented on several letters to the editor addressing the issue of students reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Brunner expressed pride to state that in Manatee County all of our students say the pledge everyday. Also our community is fortunate to have a program called VETS (Veterans Educate Today's Students) Program. This program educates our students on the importance of patriotism.

Mr. Miller

Back to School Night - said he was impressed with the turnout at Sugg Middle School for Back to School Night.

School Shelters - stated school shelters are a perfect example of a good use of our tax dollars. Providing shelters to our community is an example of partnering with the county in meeting the local needs.

Visit to Sarasota County School District - discussed how Manatee and Sarasota County School Districts could assist Charlotte County with the devastation of their schools that occurred from Hurricane Charley. Mr. Miller expressed pride of the assistance that was given by our Construction Services and Maintenance Department staff.

Mrs. Harvey

Desoto and Charlotte County - thanked staff for going beyond the call of duty in assisting the surrounding counties that were affected by Hurricane Charley.

Children's Summit - invited parents and children of the community to this event being held on August 28 at Manatee Civic Center beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Mr. Simmons

School Shelters - congratulated the shelter managers and support staff who assisted the community during the attack of Hurricane Charley.
