The School Board of Manatee County met in special session and held a public hearing at the Harllee Middle School Gym, 6423 9th Street East, Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 5:30 p.m. Members present: Larry Simmons, Chairman, Barbara A. Harvey, Frank Brunner, Harry G. Kinnan, and Walter E. Miller. Also present: Dr. Roger Dearing, Superintendent.

SPECIAL MEETING: REDISTRICTING - DAN NOLAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

The three proposed attendance boundaries developed by the Redistricting sub committees have been available for viewing by the public through our posted maps on the district website. In addition, all three proposed attendance boundaries were presented to the SAC (School Advisory Council) and PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) committees at each of the affected schools. A public hearing has been noticed and scheduled immediately prior to the Special Meeting.

The establishment of attendance zones is part of the Board's rule making authority. Therefore, the Administrative Procedures Act requires that the district publish a Notice of the rule prior to the public hearing. This advertising requirement has been met. A legal notice appeared in the Bradenton Herald on February 15, 2004. In addition, the maps of each proposal have been posted in the front office of all affected elementary schools. It is important to finalize the attendance zones for Dan Nolan Middle School in order to facilitate timely decisions regarding staffing and transportation matters.

There is no fiscal impact.

PUBLIC HEARING

Chairman Simmons welcomed those in attendance and explained the proceedings of the public hearing.

Superintendent Dearing thanked all committee members for participating in this process, and for their diligence in developing redistricting recommendations that fall within the provided guidelines. He noted that he also has a recommendation to make, which is a hybrid of one of the committee's plans.
