Superintendent McGonegal introduced this item to the Board.

He invited Dr. Verdya Bradley, Associate Director of Innovative Programs and Parental Options, to explain the statutory requirement for the presentations and the order of events for the workshop.

Mr. Richard Donnelly of Bradenton Charter School made a presentation to the Board.  Following the presentation, the Board asked questions of Mr. Donnelly about the school and items contained in the report.

Mr. Stephen Sajewski of Imagine Charter at Lakewood Ranch made a presentation to the Board, covering both this school and Imagine Charter at North Manatee.  Following the presentation, the Board asked questions of Mr. Sajewski about the schools and items contained in the report.

Dr. Bill Jones and Mr. Terry Devine of Manatee School for the Arts made a presentation to the Board.  Following the presentation, the Board asked questions of Dr. Jones about the school and items contained in the report.

Ms. Miriam Jolly of Manatee School of Arts and Science made a presentation to the Board.

Dr. Bradley expressed her requirement that all charter schools achieve and maintain high standards, and noted that it has been difficult to obtain statutorially-required documentation from several of the schools.

The Board by consensus directed Dr. Bradley to communicate with the charter schools about any outstanding documentation, providing a firm date for compliance.

The Board also provided Superintendent McGonegal with the directive that in the future, if any charter school does not provide the required documentation in the required timeframe, he may bring a recommendation to terminate the authorization of that charter.

Ms. Edna Bailey of Oasis Middle School made a presentation to the Board.  Following the presentation, the Board asked questions of Ms. Bailey about the school and items contained in the report.

Chairman Gause recessed the meeting at 7:43 p.m., and reconvened the meeting at 7:53 p.m.

ADJOURNMENT (7:30 p.m.)
6. Adjournment

Minutes:

Prior to adjournment, the Board had several comments.

Mrs. Harvey noted that on February 8, 2011, at 8:30 p.m., METV would be airing a program about teen pregnancy prevention, which would feature a discussion with four Manatee district students who are parenting or would be parenting soon.  She requested DVD copies of the program for the Board.

Mrs. Harvey announced that the documentary, "Through the Tunnel" was to have aired earlier in the day.  She said this award-winning documentary is very moving, and will be featured at the upcoming Sarasota Film Festival.

Mr. Kinnan, as Board representative on the Charter Review Committee, noted the increase in the number of charter schools and students attending those schools in Manatee County.  He said the School Board has a vested interest in continuing to support charter schools and ensuring that the students are getting the best education possible.

Ms. Carpenter observed that the accusation nationally is that charter schools only accept the highest-performing students; however, she was very pleased that many of the reports given during this workshop indicated Manatee County charter schools provide services to the entire spectrum of students.

Mrs. Harvey noted that the district, as provider of traditional public schools, may need to increase its efforts to have parents choose the traditional schools.

There being no further business to come before the Board, Chairman Gause adjourned the meeting at 8:44 p.m.
