
Agenda Item #20 Title Approval to Renew the Contract Between the School Board of Manatee County and the Sheriff of Manatee County, Florida for School Resource Officers for the 2011-2012 School Year - p.22 Executive Summary The Sheriff of Manatee County shall commit a total of eighteen (18) regularly employed deputy sheriffs to the School Resource Officers (SRO) Program, including one lieutenant who shall be wholly funded by Manatee County Sheriff Office. Of these eighteen (18) Deputy Sheriffs, one (1) will be assigned to Manatee Technical Institue, two (2) will be assigned to Horizons Academy, four (4) will be assigned to high schools, eight (8) will be assigned to middle schools, two (2) sergeants will be designated as supervisors to oversee the SRO Program and one (1) lieutenant to act as liaison between the School Board and the Sheriff. The SROs assigned to each middle school shall teach the “Crossroads, It’s Your Choice” Program to seventh grade students in their assigned schools.
Our partnership with the Sheriff’s Department promotes our core value of “individuals are responsible for their choices and actions.” Students also learn civic responsibility and the cost of freedom; the importance of honesty and integrity; and the role of law enforcement in preserving our democratic society. Financial Impact The total cost to the District is in the amount of $1,615,259.08. The funding source for these expenditures is the General Fund, Safe Schools categorical funds.
