Description:

This is a current events webquest created soon after the events of September 11, 2001. Areas of learning include facts about the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and the flight paths the planes took that day. Geography topics are also included. Those include Afghanistan, the US states involved in the tragedy, and Asia. The lesson and materials were created for academic learning and do not include graphic images surrounding the tragedy.

This website can be viewed from the internet or downloaded to individual computers for a simulated internet experience.

Objectives:

Students will use the webpages included in the project to answer questions based on the tragedgy of September 11, 2001.

Students will learn about the geography of Asia and Afghanistan.

Students will learn about different cultures (the Taliban).

Materials:

A computer for each group of students (2 or 3, recommended) with the September 11th folder on the desktop or access to the Internet.

Worksheets downloaded from the September 11th folder.

Activities/Tasks:

Preparation:

Involve students in a discussion about the events surrounding September 11th and/or the geography of the US and Asia.

Students should have a basic working knowledge of the Internet:

  • Back, Forward button
  • Links
  • Keyboarding-basic skills
  • How to access Bookmarks or Favorites if site is bookmarked
  • Use of Internet in classroom

This lesson plan completed June 11, 2002

Comments:

This lesson was very successfully implemented in 2 classrooms, one of which was a drop-out prevention class. Students worked together in groups of two and had little need for teacher intervention. Still, it would be best implemented with a teacher and another individual to help monitor progress.
