January 9, 2012 - Regular Meeting
Agenda Item #17

Title
Approval of the Contract Between the School Board of Manatee County and Kagan Professional Development for the 2011 - 2012 School Year

Executive Summary

The Principal at Moody Elementary has requested a one-day professional development workshop on Kagan Structures for Cooperative Learning and Active Engagement, Day 3.  The focus of this day will be coaching support for the classroom teachers. The Kagan Coach will support the teachers in their implementation of the Kagan Structures learned in the previous training.  Days 1 and 2 were presented to teachers in August, 2011, so Day 3 is the continuation of the schoolwide implementation of Kagan Strategies. This session is scheduled for the teachers at Moody Elementary on January 21, 2012 and the total amount of this contract is $3,999.00. Moody Elementary will use their allocated Title 1 professional development funds to pay for the Kagan professional development workshop for Day 3.

The Principals at Lincoln Middle, Harllee Middle and Central High schools have requested a one-day Kagan Secondary Mathematics Through Cooperative Learning professional development workshop for February 15, 2012.  This workshop will provide the math teachers from these schools with a variety of cooperative learning strategies and activities focused on increasing student engagement and raising student achievement. Following the workshop, support for the teachers will be provided during team meetings. The total amount of this contract is $4,159.00. The cost of the Kagan workshop will be paid by the 3 schools with their allocated Title 1 professional development funds.  A copy of the evaluated data is attached for your review.

The Kagan Professional Development contracts for the FY 2011 – 2012 school year to date total $51,465.00.  By adding these contracts for Moody Elementary, Lincoln Middle, Harllee Middle and Central High schools the total of all contracts will be $59,623.00 for the 2011 – 2012 school year.

The vendor was asked to reduce their price for the Secondary Math Workshop. The pricing actually reflects a special arrangement for Manatee County. Kagan requires a minimum of 40 participants for scheduling a workshop and they offered Manatee this opportunity for a small group of sixteen Title 1 Secondary schools because Title 1 has booked multiple workshops in the past.  The cost of the Moody Day 3 is the standard cost of the workshop and is the base price.

Both of the requested Kagan Workshops support the objectives of EdVantage by training teachers in learning strategies that promote the engagement of all students in cooperative teams.

The Superintendent recommends approval of the contract between the School Board of Manatee County and Kagan Professional Development for the 2011 - 2012 school year.
