Agenda Item #20

Title
Approval of the School Board Member Salaries for 2006-2007

Description

Section 1001.395, Florida Statutes, requires each district school board to determine the salary of its members each year during their first regular meeting following the November Organizational Meeting.  The salary shall be in effect for twelve (12) months.  Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) provides districts with a recommended school board salary amount.  Attached is a copy of the FSBA calculation for all districts.  These salary recommendations were calculated in accordance with the formula for compensation of elected county constitutional officers as set forth in Chapter 145, Florida Statutes.  This is the same formula that historically has been used for the calculation of school board member salaries.

The recommendation is that the annual salaries for Manatee County School Board members shall be $35,848.00.  The recommended salary amount is derived from a calculated base salary which is then adjusted by state certified district population data, a certified annual factor of 1.0346, and a certified cumulative annual factor of 3.0588.

The Superintendent recommends approval of the recommended salaries of School Board members.

Recommendation
Motion and approval of the recommended salaries of School Board members.

Financial Impact

The fiscal impact of this change for all five School Board members for the 2006-2007 fiscal year is $5,283.00.  The $5,283.00 reflects the cost of salary, retirement, and social security.  Once adopted, this salary shall be in effect during the succeeding 12 months and is applied to all school board members.
