Agenda Item #6

Title
Public Hearing for Consideration of Adopting an Amendment to Policy 4.9, Student Progression (Revised)

Description

The current Manatee District Student Progression Plan, which includes the promotion and remediation criteria for students in grades K through 12, was approved by the School Board on January 9, 2006.  Each year the Florida Department of Education identifies elements required in District Student Progression Plans.  The Manatee District Student Progression Standing Committee met in May, June and July to recommend modifications to the current Student Progression Plan.  The Curriculum and Instruction Division conducted a Board Workshop on August 21, 2006, to review the recommendations in the 2006-2007 Student Progression Plan.  The proposed revisions will reflect the District’s updates to rule 4.9 Student Progression.

On August 28, 2006, the School Board approved advertising the proposed amendment to Policy 4.9 and setting a public hearing. On September 2, the advertisement appeared in The Herald, which assures compliance with the provision of section 120.54 (3)(a)1, Florida Statutes (2005). In addition, the policy has been posted on the district website.  A copy of the proposed rule amendment is in Room 112.

The purpose and effect of developing the amendment to Rule 4.9 is to adopt changes in the Student Progression Plan for the 2006-2007 school year.

The Superintendent recommends approval of adopting an amendment to Policy 4.9, Student Progression.
