Approval to Apply, Accept and Expend the Renewed 2012-2013 Adult General Education Grant for $430,538.00 - p.46

Executive Summary

The Adult Education Program at Manatee Technical Institute (MTI) is submitting a proposal for $430,538.00 to the Florida Department of Education, Division of Career and Adult Education, to receive funding for adult general education and family literacy programs to: 1. Assist adults in becoming literate and obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency, 2. Assist adults who are parents in obtaining the educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children, 3. Assist adults in completing high school or its recognized equivalent, and 4. Assist adults to enter postsecondary education without the need for developmental courses. Locations for services include MTI Main and North Campuses, Orange Ridge-Bullock Elementary, Prine Elementary, and Harllee Middle Schools, Mt. Carmel Community Center, and Manatee County Public Library. 

 

This project supports the District’s Strategic Plan (EdVantage) by helping students overcome barriers, set and attain goals, participate in self-directed learning, and encourage others to learn.

The Superintendent recommends approval to apply, accept and expend the renewed 2012-2013 Adult General Education Grant for $430,538.00.

Financial Impact

This is a new grant year. All activities under this Department of Education funded adult general education grant are funded at no material expense to the District.  If approved, the School Board will receive $430,538.00 to carry out the grant project, including salary and benefits for two full-time career counselors (positions to sunset at end of grant funding), part-time teachers, instructional supplies and software, as well as membership in the Florida Adult Technical Distance Education Consortium.  There are no matching requirements.  Project period is July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, with possible continuation for one more year.
