Description:

The students will design a minimum of a four card stack report on one or several of the fifty states, using HyperStudio.

Objectives:

The purpose of this lesson is for the students to study the United States and learn HyperStudio in the process.

Materials:

  • Computers with HyperStudio and Internet access
  • Preselected websites on the fifty states: www.50states.com, www.yahooligans.com
  • Printer

Activities/Tasks:

Preparation:

  Download the USA stack onto each computer

  • Have each student pick a couple of states before they enter the Computer Lab (Make sure that every state is chosen)
  • Choose websites that will have information about the fifty states: www.50states.com, askjeeves.com, www.yahooligans.com
  • Copy of HyperStudio on every computer
  • Internet access on every computer

Day 1:

Introduce the project to the students. Discuss what will be on each card. Have the students draw for their state or states. Begin with the Title page. Have the students design the background and they are to write: Fifty States, by ...

Day 2:

Demonstrate how to make an invisible button on the map card. Remember to use the invisible button with the pencil on it. The action for the button will be to another card. The student may add sound. Using the teacher's computer in the front of the room, demonstrate where they will find the icon to the Internet on their computers. Discuss what is the Internet and how it is used. Instruct on how to use search engines, like www.yahooligans.com or askjeeves.com.

Day 3:

Review the first two class lessons. Demonstrate on the teacher's computer how to capture a picture off the Internet. Put the mouse on top of the picture and hold down the mouse button until a window appears. Click on "Copy image". Then open up HyperStudio, go to the card that you want that picture on, go to "Edit' and "Paste". The student may move around the picture to where they want it. Have the student label that picture.

Day 4-5:

Students will design pages 3 and 4. They will randomly select pictures and facts of their state and arrange them on the next two cards. If you would like, have the students pick another state and continue the same process.
