John Chapman was a man who planted apple seeds on the western frontier of the United States. People called him Johnny Appleseed.

Johnny Appleseed was born in 1774, more than 200 years ago. He loved apples, and he wanted to plant lots of apple trees so that no one would be hungry.

Johnny Appleseed sold apple trees to settlers so they could plant them on their farms. If they had no money, he gave them trees for free.

Johnny Appleseed was also a friend to the Indians. He helped the settlers and the Indians make peace.

Johnny Appleseed slept outside and often walked barefoot. He wore a tin pot for a hat, and cooked his dinner in it.
