Pirates of the Day

November 2nd, also known as el Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, marked an important holiday for those of Mexican decent everywhere, and Spanish II and IV students celebrated it by creating altars, known as ofrendas in Spanish, in dedication/memorium to someone who has passed on.  The holiday is a way to pay homage to the life that the loved on lived, and celebrate it after death.  Each student not only created an ofrenda, but also wrote an exposé, or informe, in dedication to activities that he or she did when they were alive. Ofrendas were supposed to use realia from that person's life and authentic material to represent an ofrenda one would see in Mexico--such as candles, marigold flowers, skulls, religious symbols, and even skeletons portraying the life of the deceased.  Many ofrendas reflected celebrities, but those who captured our attention most were of members close to the family.

The winners of the 2008/2008 Día de los Muertos Ofrenda Project are:
--1st place: Lainee Jennings and Lauren Thomsen
--2nd place: Erica Doig and Ashleigh Martin
--3rd place (#1): Jessica Nickell
--3rd place (#2): Krystal Martinez and Sarah McCoy
