Why not just "Google"it?
For many kinds of searches, a commercial search engine, such as Google, Ask, or Bing, is a reasonable place to start. However, because they are commercial, they will often link to sites trying to sell you something. The lists are arranged in the order of money paid to the search engine, or by the popularity of the site; neither is a reliable measure of accuracy, authority, or timeliness. Therefore, it is up to the user (you) to determine which sites are reliable. For school-related research, there are better approaches.
Try these research tools!
Big 6: Before beginning, try this research model. It will help you define your task, determine which resources to use, and guide you as you collect, organize, and synthesize your results.
Destiny: Try your school library site next. You can search for books on your topic, as well as use WebPath Express for excellent, reliable websites.
SIRS (for high school): Use this site for articles, primary sources, government documents, and websites about more than 300 social issues and debatable topics. Look for Pro/Con and click on "more issues" for a complete list. It also includes citation guides, read alouds, and more.
InfoTrac: Search dozens of databases for articles to which search engines have no access, including professional journals, literary criticism, etc. Be sure to limit your results to "full text."
World Book Advanced: Use this collection of encyclopedias for introductory articles and links to additional information. Translations to 7 languages also included.
Encyclopedia Americana (high school): Use this upper-level encyclopedia for more detailed articles, as well as links to web sites, periodicals, and books at near-by libraries.
NetTrekker: Use this as a school-related search engine. Links to additional student resources.
Finally, don't forget to use your school media specialist as a resource! Media specialists are teachers with specialized knowledge about helping you find the information you need. Just ask!
