Library Program:

The library program emphasizes information literacy skills and reading strategies. All students receive an orientation, literacy skills, and literature appreciation support. During the school year, teachers schedule their classes to use the library for research, to check out books and to complete classroom assignments that require access to the collection and support of the media staff. Information literacy skill instruction is integrated into classroom assignments and taught collaboratively by the Library Media Specialist and teacher.

Accelerated Reader Enterprise & AR BookFinder:

Nolan Middle School students have access to over 100,000 AR quizzes through Renaissance Place. Quizzes may be found for Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Biography books so that everyone can find something interesting to read and meet their AR requirements in Language Arts classes. Students earn points for successful completion of comprehension quizzes taken via computer in their Language Arts classroom. Incentives for AR include Points Club prizes, parties, and awards or recognitions. You may search for quiz information at home or at school using the AR BookFinder website. At this website you can search the quiz database by author, title, subject, reading level, point value, and much more. You can use the resource to build your own book bag and access teacher lists.

Library Media Collection:

The library media center opened in August 2004 and has grown to over 10,000 books. Our collection supports the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade curriculum at Nolan Middle School. Our media center also has full internet access for students use. There are many recommended online resources, including several electronic databases that our district and the state of Florida have invested in. These resources can be used from home as well, though some require a log in which can be obtained from the media staff. Students are taught to use these resources as a part of research and information literacy skills. They are available as links on the home page of our Destiny Library Catalog.

Check Out Information:

Students may check out three books for three weeks from our media center.  These items can be renewed one time on request. Magazines and Reference Books should only be used in the media center. Occasionally, there will be special collections on hold for classroom teachers that must be used in the media center as well.

Fines:

5 cents a day - no weekends or holidays are calculated; Maximum fine is $2.00 per book, no matter how long the book is out. You will receive a grace period of 5 days where you will not be fined after your book is due. This means you actually have four weeks total (including the grace period) before fines begin to be charged. Lost books are replaced at the cost of the book as indicated in our computer system. Students receive date due slips when they check out books, and notices once per month through their first period classroom if they have overdue materials. It is smart to write your "date due" in your planner to help you remember.
