Adult General Education


Adult basic education, ABE, ESOL, and GED Prep classes are designed for adults, 18 years old or older, who wish to learn or improve basic skills. All classes comply with the Governor's new initiative Just Read, Florida!

Classes include reading, writing, math, science, social studies, employability skills, health, consumer education, cultural awareness, citizenship, family reading/parenting, and basic computer skills.
Classes are open-entry, open-exit and are held at convenient locations throughout the county including work sites, churches, schools, and neighborhood centers. Computer assisted instruction is available through the GED level.

Tests for GED Candidates with Disabilities
In an effort to make GED Tests accessible to all applicants, accommodations are made for candidates who have diagnosed physical, mental, sensory, or cognitive disabilities and who provide appropriate documentation from a qualified professional of their impairment and its effect on their ability to take the GED Tests under standard conditions. There are no additional costs to the GED candidate for this service.

EL (English Literacy)


EL classes are available to adults 18 years old or older who are not currently enrolled in another school. Students learn English at their own pace, and courses include English language studies, citizenship, consumer education, TOEFL preparation, cultural awareness, family reading/parenting, career planning and personal development.

Orientation classes are provided for new EL students. Classes are open entry/open exit. Students may enroll at the site of their choice throughout Manatee County.

Enrollment Requirements for ABE, GED, EL


Age Requirement: All students in Adult Education must be 18 years old or older and not currently enrolled in a high school. Students who are 16 or 17 years old are required to be in high school credit classes and may be registered in the Community High School.

Placement: Placement in ABE & GED classes is based on performance on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Those students who score lower than a 9.0 grade level on the TABE are usually placed in Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses; those students with scores 9.0 and above are placed in GED preparation courses.

Proof of Identity and Residency: All students must present proof of identity and current residency. Identity must be proved by a current legal photo ID. Current residency must be proven by documents such as a declaration of domicile from the county courthouse with date of filing or a current utilities bill.
